The mission of the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences is the development of professional health care practitioners through innovation, individualized, and quality classroom, clinical, and distance education.



GENERAL SUMMARY

The Externship Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of the clinical placement portion of the SLP curriculum and coordinating clinical education team members. This position requires significant contact with students, clinical partners, outside constituents, professional consortiums, and SLP and USAHS faculty and staff. The qualified candidate must have an entry-level master’s degree or higher along with ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence. The representative will be required to possess knowledge of the SLP clinical landscape and clinical education. The representative will work collaboratively with the MS-SLP clinical education team to support, guide, and make decisions to build each student’s clinical portfolio. The candidate requires excellent oral communication and organizational skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Placement Process

  • Assure MS-SLP Clinical Education Placement Process is implemented by the MS-SLP Clinical Education Team.
  • Continuously monitoring the effectiveness of the placement process to recommend and implement changes as needed.

Communicates between the Academic Institution and Affiliated Clinical Education Sites

  • Communicates with all concerned stakeholders (e.g., clinical education sites, clinical faculty, and students) to maintain current knowledge of the educational program, the clinical education sites, and health care changes affecting clinical practice and education
  • Vets clinical sites for educational appropriateness and adherence to CAA and CFCC guidelines for clinical education for students
  • Coordinates and secures clinical placements for students across various settings 
  • Makes placement decisions to build each student’s clinical portfolios to ensure knowledge and skill competencies will be met for graduation
  • Attends Clinical Education Meetings
  • Conducts clinical site visits virtually and in-person

Student Clinical Education Requirements Tracking

  • Direct and track assigned students clinical progression to ensure all clinical hours and competencies are met by graduation.
  • Provide clinical advising to all assigned students.
  • Coordinates and develops remediation and clinical support needed to guide student clinical development
  • Work collaboratively with all MS-SLP team members for the clinical education of each student.

Clinical Site Development

  • Maintains the procedures for clinical site selection, utilization, and assessment
  • Maintains an adequate number of clinical education sites relative to quality, quantity and diversity of learning experiences to meet the educational needs of students, the philosophy and outcomes of the program, and CAA evaluative criteria
  • Provides clinical education site development through ongoing evaluation and assessment of strengths and areas for development (e.g., in service training, discontinue student placements) as approved by the Program Directors
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in health care and its effect on clinical education and apprises clinical educators and faculty of any changing trends

Works under the direction of the Director of SLP Clinical Education Placement Teamto support a collaborative environment in the clinical education office with behaviors such as:

  • Participating in the planning and coordination of clinical education functions
  • Communicating regularly and clearly with all members of the team

POSITION IN ORGANIZATION

Reports to:Director of SLP Clinical Education Placement Team

Collaborates with:   Clinical Education Associates, Clinical Support Specialists and Program Faculty and Leadership

TECHNICAL, MANAGERIAL & PEOPLE SKILLS REQUIRED

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Incumbents will be evaluated, in part, based on performance of each essential function.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree or higher
  • Prior practical hands-on experience in patient care setting in chosen specialization preferred
  • Supervision experience with graduate students and/or clinical fellows
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Professional role model
  • Responsive to distance education, adult student needs
  • Able to work in a team environment

LICENSURE and/or CERTIFICATION

  • State licensed speech-language pathologist
  • ASHA certification (minimum 9 months)

TRAVEL

This role can be performed remotely, while requiring attendance on campus for program specific events. Approximately 90% of position responsibilities will be performed remotely/virtually and 10%  of position responsibilities will be performed on campus for residencies or clinical site visits.Other occasional travel may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment but may involve exposure to moderate noise levels. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for six to eight hours daily and includes physical demands associated with a traditional office setting, e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions as necessary.



Hiring Range $68,100 - $95,760
Compensation is a reasonable estimate and will be determined using the hiring range listed above and factors including, but not limited to, skillset, level of experience, education, and physical work location, to the extent consistent with applicable law.
